What a great month it has been!! The weather has finally broken giving us lovely days and cool evenings so you can enjoy your trip to the market.
The market is bursting with wonderful fresh produce -- those glorious red tomatoes, crispy peppers, fresh dug potatoes both white and red, the sweetest melons and a new addition to the market, organically grown mushrooms by Blues Best Mushrooms. Please make it a point to stop by Nikki's table to check out the incredible portabellos, creminis and those colorful oyster mushrooms so great for a stir fry or batter dipped like morels. There is always great bakery items and new just last week, Garry's Jellies introduced a succulent garlic jelly which pairs ever so nicely with a grilled pork chop.
Our August 3rd celebration was a "Party in the Park". The pie contest was judged by Justin Gehrts of KRCG and Alex Trannel of Wildcat Golf Course. After tasting and deliberating, they both chose the Zucchini Pie prepared by Deb Kraft. Both judges commented the tasty pie changed their minds about the notorious vegetable. Second place went to Colleen Janko for an apple strawberry delight and third place went to Lori Travis for a fresh peach pie. We hope you got a chance to sample the pies after the judging but if not, try again next year!
The Lions Club, with a generous donation from Tiny But Mighty, served up bags of freshly popped corn with donations going to the First Responders. The 4-H club was present with make and take crafts for the children to enjoy as well as grilled corn dripping in butter for a tempting treat. The Carter girls (my granddaughters) had a table set up to do face painting -- great fun was had by all! Ron James and Friends provided background music during the entire market experience.
The culmination of the event were drawings for a handmade children's picnic table built by Tim Rathje and a Sony DVD player donated by JEM Productions . The winner of the picnic table was John Dunaway. John commented it was the first time he had ever won anything. The Dunaway's graciously donated the table to the Shellsburg Elementary School! We thank them for their generosity. The DVD player was won by Joan Dvorak, who didn't have one and was looking forward to getting it hooked up -- that is after she got the debris cleaned up from the windstorm. A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL WHO ATTENDED OUR CELEBRATION.
Updates on the Winner's List include July 27th -Joseph Robinson of Shellsburg, August 3rd -Marjorie Pecinovsky of Rowley, August 10th - Ann Winans of Vinton and August 17th - Ramona Krueger of Shellsburg. Just a note about Ramona -- she has perfect attendance at the Farmers' Market, not having missed a week since the market began. We thank her for her continued support of the market. Your name not on the list -- visit us at the Park on Wednesday afternoon, sign up and you could be the next winner.
Please remember that this is your market -- we are open to comments or suggestions. SEE YOU AT THE MARKET!

WELCOME TO THE MARKET IN THE PARK! If you haven't visited the Shellsburg Farmers' Market yet, we have relocated to the east end of the City Park near the open shelter house. The vendors are able to be in the shade and the food vendors are operating from within the shelter. The feedback so far has been very positive on our location.
