NEW PASSPORT FEES (Cost to travel outside U.S. goes up.)
Fees to purchase or renew passports have gone up. The change is new fees set by the U.S. Department of State and includes charges for passport books, passport cards, additional visa pages and file searches.
The new passport fee for an adult is $135, a 35% increase over the current rate. the new rate includes the $25 acceptance fee USPS and other acceptance facilities have charged in the past. The new fee for a child under 16 years of age is $105 - up from $85 - and also includes the $25 acceptance fee for new passports. USPS does not receive a fee for renewing passports.
The new fees for a passport card are $55 for an adult and $40 for a child. Both inlcude the acceptance fee.
According to the State Department - whose Bureau of Consular Affairs administers the U.S. passport and visa programs - the new fees are based on a cost-of-service study completed a year ago. The study set the adjusted costs of providing its passport and visa documentation services, some of which are lower than the previous schedule. By law, the State Department must recover the costs of issuing these documents through fees.
