SCHOOL NEWS

December Update

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!  In the schools, we have several “beginnings” and “new years” including one in August, one after the first of the year, and (for high school students) the beginning of each trimester.  It makes the year go by quickly.

Compared to when I first began teaching, our teachers spend more time reviewing students’ work and determining what the students still need to master before concepts are learned.  For example, our elementary teachers frequently collect data about our students’ reading comprehension skills.  Based on the data, they use different teaching strategies.  I am very proud of the fact our elementary teachers know a wide variety of teaching strategies they can use with students based on the students’ needs.

Our staff at the middle school is collecting and analyzing data about student behavior.  The staff had a concern with how students were interacting with each other in the hallways, in the classrooms, and in other areas of the building.  Some of the behavior can be defined as bullying and some of it is other inappropriate behavior.  The staff (including teachers, cooks, custodians, paraprofessionals, nurse – everyone) are working together to define the areas they will first address and then working to consistently reinforce good behavior and discourage poor behavior.  If you are in the building during passing periods, you will notice a positive change since last year.

Our high school teachers are working on using technology to engage students in their learning.  Many schools are going one-to-one and issuing laptop computers to each student.  Our high school is taking the approach that laptops (and other electronic devices) are a tool; it is more important that the tool is used effectively in learning.  Teachers are learning from each other and other schools about how this can best be done.
