Shellsburg City Park is located on Sells Street next to Bear Creek. The park offers a playground equipment, a gazebo, fountain, basketball court, and an open air pavilion all for use by the public and for various events. The open air pavilion was constructed by the Shellsburg Lions Club in 2005 and can be used for reunions and many other functions. To rent the pavilion, contact the city clerk to make a reservation. This park extends across to the south side of the historic spandrel bridge where the “Welcome to Shellsburg” rock is located, along with a picnic table and newly planted trees.
Shellsburg Memorial Park, located directly west of City Park, was created in June of 2013. Additional trees were planted in October of 2012 and memorial benches were added in 2013. In April 2016 a short walking trail was created through the park and future enhancements are under development. |
The Shellsburg Recreation Department is operated by community volunteers and offers T-Ball, “coach pitch” as well as girls and boys Little League. They utilize the elementary school’s ball fields and have also have arranged to offer open gym on Sunday afternoons during the winter, a welcome option for those long winter days! This group was brought under the city’s wing in 2019 to provide greater continuity and support, however they have an elected board who makes their program and financial decisions. They work hard at keeping their program fees very low and supplement these with earnings from the concession stand operated during their leagues and during tournaments sponsored by local sports organizers.
