Prairie Forest Trail
Shellsburg Area Community Group (SACG), a group of residents who volunteer their time and talents, were instrumental in creating a walking trail though a wooded area and four acre restored prairie on the north edge of town. The trail is located on school property and can be accessed just north of the business district or from the school ball fields. The area serves the elementary students as an outdoor learning and recreation area and there are also display beds of native plants with educational signage at the Pearl Street entrance. |

Benton County Freedom Rock
We are proud to be home to The Benton County Freedom Rock, which represents local veterans and honors each man or woman who put on a uniform, completed basic training, and was shipped across the country or across the ocean to a far-off locale. Every county in Iowa has a Freedom rock, painted by Iowa artist Ray "Bubba" Sorenson II. The American Legion Riders of Post #166 raised the donations to make shellsburg the home of the Benton County rock. Each rock is individualized with the history of those who served from that county. Located just a few miles north of town is Wildcat Bluff County Park. This recreation area provides the opportunities for campers, anglers, river users, and nature explorers. Benton City Fry Recreation Area
Just a few miles northwest of Shellsburg is Benton City Fry Recreation Area, a scenic, quiet, 39-acre park along the Cedar River. If you like a peaceful camping experience, then Benton-Fry Recreation Area is the perfect campground for you and your family. A wonderful location for family-gatherings and events.
