Oakwood Cemetery is city owned and operated and located just west of Shellsburg on 31st Ave Drive. The Superintendent of Municipal Maintenance operates the cemetery in accordance with Chapter 115 of the city ordinances and at the direction of the City Council. The cemetery was established on October 26, 1851 and encompasses 11 acres. The first burials occurred in the section located to the west of the road. The last burial in the west section was in 1972. Over 250 veterans, ranging from the War of 1812 to present day, are buried at Oakwood and the local Legion members are proud to decorate the cemetery for patriotic holidays. A Civil War veteran who received the congressional medal of honor is even buried there.
