The fire department takes an active role in teaching the youth of our community about fire prevention. Every October during fire prevention week, several of our members visit Shellsburg Elementary to teach fire prevention to grades Kindergarten through 4th grade. The fire department has implemented a safety awareness program for 3rd and 4th graders in which each student in 3rd grade receives a free smoke detector with a battery to be installed in their home. Fourth graders are given a replacement battery for their smoke detectors. All grades are given fire prevention material to be taken home and shared with their family. The highlight of this day is that all kindergartners get a ride on a fire truck and a tour of the station. The Shellsburg Fire Auxiliary helps out with purchasing the fire prevention materials that are passed out.
The fire department’s main fundraiser is an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast served on the first Sunday of fire prevention week in October. |
