Garbage will be hauled from each residence on a weekly basis. Recycling will be picked up every other week (refer to the calendar for pickup dates). On alternate weeks during the summer months (April through October), yard waste will be removed. Each residence will be provided with three carts and they will be labeled for garbage, recycling and yard waste. Carts are assigned to each residence and if the cart is lost or damaged due to neglect or misuse a new cart can be purchased for $50. All garbage must be bagged, and the cart lid must be closed. Bags of garbage not in the cart will not be picked up. No yard waste or recycling is accepted in the garbage carts. Recycling: All recycling must be placed in the recycling cart and the lid must be closed. Recycling materials not in the cart will not be picked up. No garbage or yard waste is accepted in the recycling carts. The following items may be placed in the recycling carts:
Yard waste: All yard waste must be placed in the yard waste cart (green lid) and the lid must be closed. No garbage or recycling is accepted in the yard waste carts. Items which can be placed in the yard waste carts include yard trimmings, plants and flowers, leaves, grass, and small branches (under 4 inches in diameter and shorter than 3 feet). Items not accepted are garden hoses, yucca or palm plants, manure, plastic bags, dirt or rocks and flower pots. All carts are to be placed on a flat and level surface at street level at the end of your drive. The lid opening should be facing the street. The carts cannot be within 4 feet of other carts, mailboxes, vehicles, telephone poles, trees, shrubbery, or any other obstructions. Carts cannot be placed under trees, power lines, or any other overhead obstacles. Do not place your cart on snow piles or tall curbs. Carts are to be removed from street side within 24 hours of collection. If you have larger items such as appliances, mattresses or furniture you can arrange for Johnson County Refuse to pick these up for a fee. You must call them to determine their charge for the particular item and arrange a method of payment. Benton County Landfill 319-454-6392 Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 3:30 pm First Saturday of the month 8:00 am to 11:30 am Schafer’s Iron & Metal 319-440-0243 (Ask for Troy) Will pick up and pay cash for cars and trucks. Must have title available. They also purchase other types of bulk scrap metal. Rural Recycling Drop-Off Sites Throughout Benton county there are rural drop off sites for recycling. These are designed to provide a recycling option to residents of the county and are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. People who live within the city limits are encouraged to use their curbside recycling programs. One of the rural drop sites is at the west edge of Shellsburg, near the county’s maintenance shed. Signage indicates what recyclables may be deposited in the bins. There is to be no garbage, glass, or dumping of other materials in these bins. If you do use this site, please abide by these restrictions because improper items in these bins creates an unnecessary expense for the county and also, unfortunately, causes the entire load to be deposited in the landfill. Shellsburg Yard Waste Station There is an area at the south end of 1st Street for town residents to bring in leaves and small branches. As you approach, the right (west) side is for twigs and small branches. Please do not place limbs or logs larger than 5 inches in diameter in this area. The area on the left (east) is for leaves. Please do not place paper or plastic bags in either section. |
